Down-The-Hole (DTH) drilling is a percussion method where the hammer and bit travel together down the borehole, delivering impact energy directly at the rock face rather than through the drill string. This minimizes energy loss over depth, making it highly effective for penetrating hard, abrasive rock in mining, construction, and water well applications.

Rotary drilling relies on rotational torque and downward pressure through the drill string to cut or crush rock, best suited to softer formations. DTH drilling uses a pneumatic hammer positioned at the bit to deliver direct percussive impact at the rock face, providing faster penetration and straighter boreholes in hard, abrasive rock compared to rotary methods.
