A carbide button bit is a DTH hammer bit fitted with tungsten carbide inserts (buttons) on its face. As a pneumatic hammer drives the bit downward with high-impact percussion, the carbide buttons fracture and crush hard rock, making these bits ideal for mining, water well, and geothermal drilling in hard and abrasive formations.

PDC bits use polycrystalline diamond compact cutters that shear rock through rotary motion, performing well across a range of formations. DTH hammer bits use tungsten carbide buttons driven by a pneumatic hammer that delivers repeated percussive impact, making them better suited for very hard, abrasive rock where rotary cutting alone is less efficient.
